Questions
What people ask us
Anything else, call 808.382.5618 and we would rather you asked before you came.
When is the gallery open?
Every day, 9 am to 9 pm, seven days a week.
Where exactly is it?
Inside the Moana Surfrider at 2365 Kalākaua Avenue in Waikīkī, on the ground floor, Lobby Suite 3. Look for the courtyard and the banyan tree and you are close.
Does it cost anything to go in?
No. The gallery is free to enter, the film is free to sit through, and you do not have to buy anything.
Is it a museum?
No. It is a gallery. There is an exhibition about Duke Kahanamoku’s life, a ten minute film with chairs in front of it, and things for sale carrying his name.
Can I buy something online?
Yes. Most of what is in the room is in the online collection and ships from Honolulu. Full-size boards are by enquiry: call the gallery.
How far is the Duke Kahanamoku statue?
The bronze on Kūhiō Beach is a few hundred steps southeast along Kalākaua Avenue, four or five minutes on foot. It was dedicated on 24 August 1990, his hundredth birthday.
Is the gallery run by the Kahanamoku family?
No. It uses his name, signature and creed under licence from his rights holders. It is not run by the family and does not speak for them. It is a tenant of the Moana Surfrider rather than part of the hotel.
